Hikes off of Highway 50 (around South Lake Tahoe)

Going With The Flow

Cool, clear water

There is something mesmorizing about water.  The way that it feels against your skin, the vast array of sounds that it makes, and how it can put you in an other worldly trance.  It can be soft and sensual as well as loud and crushing.  Water is the essence of life.  It is cleansing and renewing.  Deep in the well is where we find our sense of being and purpose…

The hike to Horsetail Falls is very popular for several reasons: 1.  It is short, 2. It is right off of the highway, and 3.  It is stunningly beautiful, especially in late spring, early summer.  I went on this trek with some fun friends of mine and since I had never been, they led they way.  It was a hot day in late June and perfect to cool off in the shallow pools  and take in the beauty of the raging falls (even during this drought).  The trail head is off of highway 50 just before the grade to Lake Tahoe.  There is a small fee to park in the lot. The trek is only 1.5 miles one way to see the falls, but some daring folks will start climbing to get to the top.  The trail is at an incline but not too difficult and is considered moderate.  If you go farther, it can be strenuous and even dangerous. The path can be a little difficult to follow sometimes, but let the river be your guide and the trail pretty much stays by it.

My friends’ and I took the unbeaten path, so it included more climbing over granite and rocks, and made for a good workout!  Because we went in June, there was fast and heavy water flow, which made the falls that much more beautiful and exciting.  We climbed a little past the end of the trail, and found a big pool to take a dip in…but for me, only my feet got wet, as the water was freezing! I was truly amazed at how clear the water was…it was absolutely stunning.  After climbing a little further, I got a good view of the upper falls, which I unfortunately did not get a good image of.  As a matter of fact, all of these images are from my iphone, which did a pretty decent job.  But the upper falls were too blurry to post.  However, the view was imprinted in my mind, and there it will stay.  So, I sat and listened to the sound of the falls, let the mist cool my warm skin, and made a note of how thankful I was to be there, and to have good friends.

  1. Hi again, newbie Donna Weiler. Your photos of the water in this group are so refreshing. Today is September 30, 2016. I live in western New York. Last winter was the warmest and most snow-less in my 58 years here. This summer we had a drought, which followed the snow-less winter. Trees began dropping their leaves to lessen the demand practically right as the leaves appeared this Spring. Everything was thirsty flora and fauna and me! I am always so hot and annoyingly sweaty most likely due to my health, not my activity. The water in this group of photos looks so thirst-quenching and cool. Wish that was in the backyard here!
