“Keep close to nature’s heart…and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.” John Muir
I thought I would finish my 2015 hikes blogs with the one that I did first, early last summer. My friend Christine, her daughter Thea, and dog Fernie joined me for this one. This hike is one both of us had done a few summers before and were eager to revisit it again. The hike begins out of Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park which is located just outside of Nevada City. Be forewarned though, that much of the road is a dirt road that makes for some slow going if you don’t have a four wheel drive vehicle. If you have never been, the state park is worthwhile checking out with historic buildings and tour offerings. Cost for day use is $8.00. The trail that we took is called the Humbug Creek Trail and is a round trip of 2.7 miles. Although the distance is short, it is a very steep hike and makes for quite a workout!

The Humbug Creek Trail hike is basically a straight shot downhill along Humbug Creek which feeds into the Yuba River. There are some great spots to rest along the way and cool off in the creek. The best part of the hike for me, since it was a hot day, was getting down to the Yuba River and then jumping in to cool off. It is like a spiritual baptism to let the river flow over every part of you….and on this day, I was washed clean. Although tired, I felt pure joy. It was a great spot to relax and Christine, Thea, Fernie and I took full advantage. We did, however, have to face the inevitable fact that it is straight uphill back and both Christine and I had forgotten how strenuous the trek back was. When we arrived at the car, we both looked at each other and agreed that this was a hike that we had come full circle with and said “been there, done that”. Perhaps on a little cooler day, it would’ve have felt less strenuous. Needless to say, it was a worthwhile hike and I would definitely recommend doing it at least one time.
