Hikes off of Highway 88/Carson Pass

Finding My Way

“What I’m looking for after all this time, keeps me moving forward trying to find it;  since I learned to walk, all I’ve done is run;  ready, on my mark, doesn’t everyone need a place in the world?”

It seems that I have spent all of my life searching for my place in the world…at times the journey has been glorious and other times, complete despair.  All the while, I’ve never felt like I’ve truly found my place.  Maybe that is the true definition of a seeker, always looking for something greater than yourself and always searching for where you fit in the world.  As I continue on my journey through life, I realize that I will always be searching, because it’s in my blood.  What I find are bits of contentment and purpose along the way.  And in many instances, it requires following the road less traveled.

Sharon and I took a hike up at the Bear Lake Reservoir (off of Hwy. 88) early last July.  The trail took us to Shriner Lake, and was an easy 4.2 miles round trip.  The biggest challenge with this hike was getting to the trail head.  Since we don’t have a 4 wheel drive or high clearance vehicle, I had to rent one to tackle the dirt road that took us to the trail head.  And I have to say that I’m glad I did!  The dirt road was pretty narrow and bumpy and definitely not for a regular passenger car.  The end result was totally worth it!  It is safe to say that my next car will be a 4 wheel drive vehicle.  To get to the trail head, take hwy. 88 to the Bear River Reservoir.  Keep right at the first junction and head towards the Bear River Campground.  You will stay on this paved road for about 7 miles, and then continue to stay to the right at the junction for Tanglefoot trail.  At about 3.1 miles past this junction, you will see a sign for Tanglefoot trail and turn left.  You will now be on a dirt road for about 3.7 miles where you will find the trail head.

The drive itself was an adventure and it felt as if we were in the middle of nowhere.  At first it was a little unsettling, but once we got going on the trail, every part of me felt like I was in the right place at the right time.  This was where I needed to be.  Sharon and Adobe enjoyed this journey with me and took in all it had to offer.  We passed a beautiful pond that Adobe could wade in and enjoyed some lunch at the lake.  Shriner lake was beautiful and serene.  It was a great way to spend the afternoon.  Although the road was bumpy,  the destination was fantastic!

Sometimes the road less traveled is exactly where we need to be.  I have traveled down this road many times and it is never easy.  Nothing in life is easy, and I keep hoping to find an easier path.  I haven’t found it yet.  Maybe I’m not supposed to.  Perhaps the greatest treasures in life are found on the road less traveled.  Perhaps it is on this road, that I find my place.  One thing is for sure, I will always keep searching…
