“We’re all just walking each other home” Ram Dass
During the summer of 2015, I went on a hike to Emigrant Lake (See Finding Grace), and came upon a wonderful woman who was an elementary school teacher in South Lake Tahoe. We had a short conversation about hiking and she recommended that I go on a trek to Lake Genevieve, as it is beautiful. I added this information to my memory storage and vowed that I would do this hike. As that summer went on, I wasn’t able to get that hike in and I promised myself that I would make it a priority for the summer of 2016…and so I did, this past July.
This hike starts at the Meeks Bay Trailhead in Lake Tahoe. To get there, take Highway 80 towards Lake Tahoe, and then exit at Hwy. 89 towards Tahoe City. Follow Hwy. 89 to the Meeks Bay Campground. The trailhead is located across the street and has a small dirt parking lot. This is a very popular trail, so get there early!

The hike to the first of seven tallant lakes is about 4.5 miles one way. I went to the first two lakes, Lake Genevieve and Crag Lake, which made the hike ten miles round trip. To see all seven lakes would require an overnight backpacking excursion, and I’m sure it would be totally worthwhile. Although it was a long hike, it wasn’t too difficult in terms of ascending and descending. Along the way, I gazed at many wildflowers, a newly formed meadow, and a pond filled with lily pads. When I arrived at Lake Genevieve, it was quiet and beautiful, surrounded with trees, giving a feeling of a secluded place that I could call my own. The woman who recommended this hike, was spot on, as it was truly beautiful. I continued on to Crag Lake and when I arrived, I was welcomed by a much larger body of water with some incredible views. I found a rock to enjoy my lunch and let myself be enveloped by all of its’ vastness.
As I gazed out into this majestic place, my mind wandered to some of the people that I have met on my journeys, and how we are all connected in this life. We are connected to each other, to the earth and all of its’ creatures and to the cosmos. This all so important connection is called love. I quickly recognize this connection when I experience it…and there is nothing greater. It is ever present when I am out in nature. It is where we all belong and where we are all our best. I know that I will never see some of these people again and yet, we are connected…connected to the universe, connected by love. For this, I am forever grateful…
