Hikes off of Highway 88/Carson Pass

A Mile in the Wild

I am truly amazed at how a short hike can feel like I am in complete wilderness.  Maybe it’s because I am!  No matter where I go in the mountains, there is always a wildness and beauty that is unmatched.  The hike to Shealor Lake is short but spectacular.  The trailhead is right off of hwy. 88 near Silver Lake and the Kit Carson Lodge. It is just over 1.2 miles to get to the lake, but be warned, it is straight uphill and then downhill during this short trek.  At the top, there are great views of Caples Lake and the El Dorado Forest in the opposite direction.  There is also a great view of another smaller lake adjacent to Shealor, just over a boulder ridge.  When I saw it, I set my sights on getting over to that spot which added another mile and a half or so to my hike.  Because it was a shorter hike, I brought my 7 year old Australian shepherd with me.  Adobe was more than excited to join me and I always love having him with me!

After the steep ascent to the top, I was ecstatic to take in the cool breezes and vast views that were before me.  As I descended down to Shealor Lake, I came across a few friendly hikers.  I briefly chatted with two women who had agreed with me that they too, would eventually make their way over to the smaller lake.  When I arrived at Shealor, Adobe was thrilled to cool off in the lake and I noticed that he wasn’t alone, as a couple of people were also taking advantage of the cool water on this warm June day.

I relaxed by the shore as Adobe trodded through the shoreline, taking in his pure joy and the beauty of all that was around me.  After a short while, I decided it was time to climb over the boulder ridge and check out the other smaller, and what seemed, a more private lake.  It didn’t take very long, and when I reached this idyllic spot, I was absolutely stunned.  I had to check my pulse to make sure that I was still among the living.  It was quiet and beautiful, surrounded by huge pine trees and boulders that gave this place a magic of its own.  Adobe and I had walked into the surreal….a place that I sensed I had been to before in some other time and space.  It was truly overwhelming.   Needless to say, we stayed for awhile and investigated all of the different parts of it.

As I sat by the water and took all of this in, I was approached by the two women I had met earlier.  We engaged in conversation about the beauty of this place, and I noticed that one of them was older.  She had mentioned her age in talking about her hiking adventures.  She was 76 years old. She asked me if I wanted the photo that she had taken of Adobe and I by the water, and of course I said yes.  I admired her so, and thought to myself,  I want to still be doing this when I am her age!  What a wonderful gift to meet such an inspiration in this special place…a week later I received an email with this treasure of a picture…
