“In this world there’s a whole lot of golden, in this world there’s a whole lot of pain; in this world you’ve a soul for a compass and a heart for a pair of wings; there’s a star on the far horizon, rising bright in an azure sky; for the rest of the time that you’re given, why walk when you can fly” Mary Chapin Carpenter (Why Walk When You Can Fly)
June is a month where the landscape is changing, moving from the final throes winter into the bursting life of summer. Animals will be coming out of hibernation and beginning their hunt for food. And it all begins with water…the snow melts and the rivers become strong and powerful. The lakes and ponds are brimming and soon the forest will come alive again with all of its’ forms of life.

On this day in the first week of June, I went to find a hike up off of highway 4. I’ve never explored this area of the Sierra and was looking forward to what it had to offer. So the plan was to hit the Asa Lake trailhead and take a fairly easy trek to the lake. However, since we had a good snow this year, the dirt road that would take me to the trailhead was packed with snow, not allowing my car pass through. I didn’t anticipate this, so instead decided to do a little driving and explore the Mosquito Lake area. The road in this area of Highway 4 is narrow but beautiful. My wife was with me and we stopped and explored around the lake and the nearby river. The amount of water flowing through the river was impressive and was such a contrast from the stillness and solitude of the lake. It reminded me that summer was just around the corner…when the mountain sings its’ songs of life and beckons me to join in the dance. Ah yes, I look forward to this every year and look forward to the time I can return to this area and hit the trails…
