Royal Gorge is a fantastic ski resort to do either cross country skiing or snow shoeing. It is one of the largest cross country ski resorts in the United States and offers many different areas of groomed trails to explore. Also, it is easy to get to as it is right off of I80 at Soda Springs. As I mentioned in my last blog, Winter Wanderland, I am learning how to navigate in the snow and am eager to do some winter exploring. But, since I am a novice, it takes baby steps to learn how to navigate the winter landscape and get into shape while keeping myself safe. On this trip, I was alone, so I decided that Royal Gorge would be the perfect place to practice and explore. Of course I brought my trusty companion, Adobe. This is a safe place as the trails are well groomed and a resort worker checks you in and out of the trail system.
Royal Gorge sits right between two downhill ski resorts, Sugar Bowl and Soda Springs. There is only one track that allows dogs called the Van Norden Track. The area is basically a large meadow between two mountains, and offers some beautiful views. I went on a sunny 60 degree day and didn’t need much warm clothing, but did slather on the sunscreen! The total mileage of the snowshoe hike was between 5-6 miles. Adobe actually was warm and kept trying to find spots to cool off in the creek! About halfway out, there is a warming hut (not needed on this day) to rest weary legs if needed.

This hike was good for me because it was flat and good practice for snowshoes, while Adobe met many fur friends along the way. I was most amazed at the beauty of the white mountains against the blue sky….so different from the summer time. Plus the snow is so soft and peaceful. I look forward to exploring more of this countryside. Since winters in California are pretty short, there isn’t as much time, but there are certainly plenty of places to investigate…and I plan on doing as much as I can!
