It was five years earlier that I first went on this hike to Emigrant Lake.  It was a very dark and vulnerable time in my life and I was accompanied by a couple of people who brought a lot of negativity to me and as such, left a bad mark on this trek.  After I had gotten home, I wrote down some notes to remember:  1. it was beautiful with waterfalls and wildflowers, 2.  bring mosquito repellent, and 3.  go alone.  I told myself I would do this hike again one day, and really enjoy all that it had to offer.   It took five years to finally decide to take the trek again.  For the second time around, the negativity and people associated with it were long gone, and my goal was to change the dark memory associated with this beautiful hike.

So this past July, I parked my car at the Emigrant Lake trailhead which is at the Caples Lake Dam (one mile past the Kirkwood Ski Resort) off of Hwy. 88, and set off on my journey.   This hike is considered moderate and a total of 8 miles round trip.  The first part of the journey was an easy stroll along the shores of Caples Lake.  After a couple of miles, the trail started to steadily climb away from the lake.  As is the case often when hiking in the summer, clouds were moving in and out throughout the day, which kept it cool and visually interesting.  Along the way, there was an abundance of wildflowers, just as I had remembered from before.  I came across the waterfall area, and was not surprised to see it flowing much less than before, due to the drought.  However, it was still beautiful and serene.  I continued on and met a wonderful woman who was a local teacher.  We had a nice chat, and she gave me some ideas of other areas to hike and explore.

As I ascended my way to the lake, my spirit was awakened by the quietness and beauty.  It was a completely different feeling from when I hiked here in 2010. I knew that I had made a good decision to come back to this place at this time.  As I got closer, I arrived at a pond and creek that led to the lake, with an abundance of wildflowers taking in the sunshine.   Once at the lake, I came upon a large boulder to rest on, so I sat down, took off my pack, raised my face to the sun,  and felt a warming sense of love and redemption…yes, the darkness was behind me.  I had found grace.
