Snowshoe Hikes

Gonna Go Round in Circles

“I’ve never been a strong man, at least outside the skin;  and I’m eager and afraid at the same time, to move from where I’ve been.”  Bob Bennett  (Mountain Cathedrals)

Sometimes it is hard to navigate this life.  I was reminded of this when I went out for a spring snowshoe hike this past April.  So many times we look toward the destination and forget about the journey.  Yet, the journey can be stressful if we don’t know how to get to that destination.  This spring hike was about me playing with my compass and GPS device, and since my only companion was my faithful dog Adobe, I wasn’t set on going too far.  The great part was that it was a beautiful, sunny day.

So much snow, that a staircase had to be shoveled to get to the area to walk

I had taken a Winter Navigation class the month prior, and with record snowfall this year, I wanted to get out and start practicing what I had learned.  I will say, that the lesson that I most learned on this day, was that navigation takes a lot of practice!  And just like life, sometimes I feel like I am just going around in circles.  The good news is that I always seem to find my way out, no matter how long it takes me.  And I believe that the most important aspect to this is, finding our way out…moving to a better place and utilizing skills to make that happen.

On this day, I didn’t intend on going very far, so that I kept myself safe while practicing.  Snow is not easy to navigate as there are a lot of things to look out for.  What is underneath your feet is important to know, as there are creeks, ponds, lakes, tree wells, and big rocks that can be very deceiving.  It takes a lot of patience to learn and understand a snowy terrain, and luckily, I am a very patient person.  Although on this journey, I got a little frustrated as I was trying to reach a lake and understood which direction to go to get there, but the snowy terrain was tricky and I ended up not being able to make it.

What was spectacular about the entire trek was paying attention to all that was along the way.  There was so much beauty around me, that ultimately, it didn’t matter whether I ended up at the lake or not.   Snow is so serene and gives the landscape such a different and beautiful look.  As Adobe and I trekked along, I couldn’t help but take in the breezes and all of the peace that this place had to offer.  It reminded me, that life is about the journey and not the destination.

There will be many more days of practicing, and the seasons will change the look of the landscape.  This will always keep it interesting and challenging.  It reminds me of how much life is a mystery and is always changing.  I am okay with mystery…although, it’s hard to be comfortable with it sometimes.  But it is in the mystery that we truly find out who we are, and how beautiful this life is.  The main thing is to keep moving forward with courage and with strength…

Keep looking ahead…
