Grass Lake and the Fall

Fall is coming

Last week, on a day when it was close to one hundred degrees at home,  I went on a trek up to Grass lake where it was a nice 79 degrees, and the wind indicated that fall is near.  There were splashes of fall color and plenty of serenity and beauty to take in.  Each place I go, I am always amazed at the true beauty of the mountains.  It takes me to a place inside of myself that is hard to describe, but speaks to my soul like no other place does.  There is nothing like the sound of the wind through the pine trees.  I can listen to it all day and it always beckons me back to this magical place.

This trail begins at the Glen Alpine Trailhead which is located just past the Fallen Leaf Lake Marina/Cafe and the fire station off of Fallen Leaf Lake Road.  Fallen Leaf Lake Road is 2 miles north of South Lake Tahoe on highway 89.  The hike is considered moderate and is about 5.4 miles round trip.  I enjoyed this hike very much but was not in very good shape for it.  It was a good workout that left me tired but satisfied.  There is a little history along the way, as the trail wanders through the old Glen Alpine Resort and the buildings are still there with some sign posts telling the history of the place.  There are also some great views to check out as well.  Before I arrived at the lake, I came upon a beautiful little pond.  I have a great affinity for ponds and love to photograph them.  They are so tranquil, and quiet….

When I arrived at Grass Lake, it was bigger than I thought, and I could follow the trail all the way down to the other end of the lake.  The lake opened up with some lovely views and when I got down to the other end, it had narrowed and split off, with a little island in the middle.  It was shallow and very calm.  A perfect resting spot.  Splashes of fall color were everywhere and I tried to capture some photos of it.

Adjacent to the Glen Alpine trailhead is a lovely little lake called Lilly Lake.  I decided I would do the hike to Grass Lake first and then shoot some photos of Lily Lake when I return.  Bad decision.  To get to a good spot to shoot some pics, I had to cross a stream and climb over a log.  It was a nice spot to take it all in, especially since I was tired from the hike.  However, on the way back, my foot caught on the log and I took a major header!  (See photo)  I gathered myself, happy that my camera was still working and the lens not scratched, and headed back to the car.  I had a some choice words that I uttered on the way.  Reminder to myself…..check the lake out before the hike when I’m not tired!  I hope you enjoy the photos and  I look forward to my next trek!

  1. Well written and beautiful pictures. You are showing me a different side of the US (I used to go to the big cities on my business trips over there)

  2. October is my favorite month. This year we are still dealing with high temps and the fall color is late in showing itself so your journey to the high country was perfect. How many miles typically do you journey? Your images are stunning. Keep it up!
