Hikes off of Highway 80 (near North Lake Tahoe)

Keeping It Simple

“Nature teaches us simplicity and contentment, because in its’ presence we realize we need very little to be happy.”  Mark Coleman

Life can be complicated…people can be complicated.  Navigating through all of this can be overwhelming.  Perhaps that is why I feel so much comfort when I am out in nature.  Nature provides us with a simple beauty.  It is always there for us…we just have to seek it out.  It is safe to say that I do plenty of that.  The hike that I went on in early July, was to Summit Lake.  It is an easy 4 mile round trip hike that begins at the PCT trail at Boreal Ski Resort.  My trusty pup, Adobe, joined me on this short trek, and enjoyed the many areas of snow that still lingered from the winter.

This is a good hike to take if you are short on time as the trail head is right off of Highway 80, the hiking distance short, and the elevation climb minimal.  This hike is rated as easy.  However there is no shortage on beauty.  The only downfall, is that you can hear highway traffic for a good portion of the hike.  The sounds of the creek help drown some of that out though.  To get to the PCT trailhead, take I80 East and exit at the Castle Peak/Boreal off ramp.  Turn right, and then left.  Follow the road past the Boreal Inn and it will end at a good size parking lot. Once you park, look for the sign for the PCT trailhead.  Follow the PCT past two junctions and then look for the summit lake junction.  This junction will take you left and heading under the freeway and up to Summit Lake.  There is another junction to go to the right towards the lake once you are on the other side of the freeway.  Fortunately all of the junctions are well signed and will point you in the right direction!

I had done this hike before and it was full of wildflowers and great vistas.  This year, the vistas were the same, but the late snow made for full creeks and late (probably end of July) wildflowers.  Adobe enjoyed cooling off in the  creek and the meadows were full of mules ears just starting to leaf out.  The tunnel under the freeway was a little tricky to get through as there was water in half of it.  As it was, there was more water in the tunnel later in the day on the way back, but not so much to not get through…just some wet feet!

Once we arrived at the lake, we were ready to have some lunch and enjoy the view.  The lake is a beautiful, serene setting to take in.  It made me think about how close I was to the freeway and the noise, and yet surrounded by complete solitude.  So, on this day, it was about keeping it simple, enjoying what nature had to offer, and putting the noise behind me.  This simple silence also stills the racing thoughts of my brain.  And quite frankly, who doesn’t need that?  Slowing down and finding peace in each moment life presents, keeps us in a space that connects us to each other and to everything around us.  It is this connection that takes us to another realm of life.
