Hikes off of Highway 50 (around South Lake Tahoe) Snowshoe Hikes

Room With a View

“If you ever need some proof that time can heal your wounds, just step inside my heart and walk around these rooms; where the shadows used to be, you can feel as well as see how peace can hover”  Mary Chapin Carpenter (This is Love)

As spring swiftly passed by, I knew that I wouldn’t have long to get in  another snowshoe hike.  So at the end of April I headed out to Echo Lakes to see what I could find.  It was a beautiful day and conditions were great.  There were two directions I could go: 1.  take the low road and hike along the lakes, or 2.  take the high road toward Becker Peak to get some views.  I was feeling ambitious, so I, along with my trusty companion Adobe, trekked up toward Becker Peak.  Total distance was 3.8 miles round trip.

To get to the this hike, take Highway 50 east towards Echo Summit.  Turn left at Johnson Pass Road and follow the road until you get to the snow park lot on the right.  There is plenty of parking and restrooms as well.  To get to Echo Lakes from the lot, you have to walk up Echo Lakes road which is across the street, or you can amble along the side of the road.  I ambled along through the shut down Berkeley Camp summer cabins and then started to climb up on the left side of the lakes.  The climbing is not too treacherous, and offers some fabulous views of Echo Lakes and Lake Tahoe.

I made my way up towards Becker’s Peak, but didn’t go to the very pinnacle.  There were some areas that were tough to negotiate and I knew that Adobe wouldn’t be able to make it to the top.  So we stopped short and found a good spot to take in the views and eat some lunch.

Looking back towards the trail

As we sat in solitude, I couldn’t help but be in awe of the views.  I thought of time and how constant it is and quickly it passes.  Through our life experiences, we gain so much as well as suffer loss and pain.  Time is the great teacher.  Sometimes you just need a room with a great view to see where you’ve been,  and what you’ve learned with a fresh sense of peace.   Wisdom is the gift that time offers.  It has taken years for me to absorb this into my being.  And as I continue to do so, the losses find solace in the empty spaces of my heart.

Adobe’s ears perked up with the strange sound

One aspect that I like about being out in the snow, is how quiet it is.  I was enjoying this quite a bit, until I heard a loud sound, way up in the trees.  It sounded like a loud moan or sigh.  It didn’t feel threatening, but then it definitely didn’t sound like a bird or even a small animal.  Adobe perked up too.  We were ready to head out, and we continued to hear this sound as we descended out of the area.  I can’t be sure of what it was, but a two months later I came up to the lakes and saw a resident young bear near the resort.  I had to wonder if it could’ve been him, letting us know he was there. I thanked him for noting his presence as we made our way back down the mountain.   At the end of the day, we were tired and satisfied.
