The Art of Transformation

Early last summer, I took a drive up highway 80 seeking to explore Fuller Lake and the area surrounding it.  A friend of mine enjoys fishing there, and though I don’t fish, I wanted to check out its beauty.  So My dog Adobe and I hit the road.  I took the exit to Hwy 20 and then turned on Bowman Lakes Road.  A few miles up the road is the parking area for Fuller Lake.  However, before I arrived at the lake, I noticed a trailhead with a parking lot.  I decided to check out the lake and then stop at this lot on my way back.  Adobe and I explored the beauty and serenity of Fuller Lake for about a half hour, had some snacks, and went back to explore this other area.

When I got to the trailhead parking area, much to my surprise, it was a short, interpretive trail.  Meaning, there are signs along a well groomed path to educate about the environment of the area.  It is called Sierra Discovery Trail and it is a flat, easy one mile trail.  If you ever want to get up into the mountains, but don’t want to do a lot of hiking, this is a very nice place to have a picnic lunch and do a little exploring.  The main attraction is the 12 foot Bear River falls, and the  trail follows along the river and then circles back around.  It was so tranquil and relaxing that I came back to this spot on a separate occasion.  The trees and ferns were lush, the adjacent meadow was filled with Tiger Lily’s, and the sound of the water serenaded the forest.

It occurred to me as I sat at one of the picnic tables, that I need to get out into nature as much as I possibly can.  It is centering and connecting, a place where the stresses of reality are lost or at least put on a temporary hold.  I captured a photo of a butterfly with whom posed with wings spread for me and made me think of their life cycle.  The butterfly is the symbol of transformation and for us, self-transformation.  It seems that we are always in some phase of the transformative life cycle, as it should be, because nothing is constant.  Nature is the place that reminds me to be patient with the process of change and to try to find beauty even in the dark times.  Most of all, it teaches me that the transformative power of the butterfly is nothing to fear, but something to embrace.
