Hikes off of Highway 88/Carson Pass

The Sky Knows No Limit

“Come dance on the west wind and touch on the mountain tops, sail over the canyons and up to the stars, and reach for the heavens and hope for the future, and all that we can be and not what we are”  John Denver (The Eagle and The Hawk)

Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved to explore.  Those who know me, know that when I’m out in nature, I always want to go a little further to see what’s ahead.  Over the years I have learned to temper that, so as to not go beyond what I am prepared to do.  It has taken some discipline, because I ALWAYS want to go farther.

The trailhead to Granite Lake was a longer drive (2 hours and 30 minutes) than I had anticipated and was in an area I had never explored before.  To get to it, I had to drive over the Carson Pass (hwy. 88) until I reached Blue Lakes Rd.  (before you get to S. Lake Tahoe).  The trail head is at the Upper Blue Lakes Campground, and takes about another 20 minutes or so to get there from Hwy. 88.

This is another hike that I did last July and was a good time to do it, as the wildflowers were in full bloom.  Total distance for this hike is about 4.6 miles and is considered easy to moderate.  Adobe joined me on this one, and we both enjoyed all of the sensations that this hike had to offer.

The weather was really moving and I was surprised that we didn’t get rained on during this trek.  However, the dramatic skies presented a vision of dancing clouds and a changing landscape.  Along the way, I came upon a beautiful pond and it was definitely worth spending some time and taking it in.  Adobe, too, loved this spot as he enjoyed the cool pond water.  As we made our final ascent to Granite Lake, we took in the cool breezes enjoyed the variety of wildflowers that lined the path and lead the way.

The clouds were still moving as we arrived at Granite Lake, although the sun broke through to allow us a nice rest for lunch.  It’s a beautiful Alpine Lake, not big, but representative of it’s name, Granite Lake.  There were lots of boulders and sparse trees, which allowed the breezes to flow freely through the top of the lake.  As we finished our break, the clouds came rolling in, and it was time to head back.  Of course, I wanted to go farther and check out the area just beyond the lake, but decided that would wait for another time, as I wanted to beat the rain back….and I did!  It was another great adventure under the open skies…
