Hikes off of Highway 88/Carson Pass

The Wonder of Water

“And if you were to ask me, after all that we’ve been through, still believe in magic?  Yes I do;  Of course I do… Magic (Coldplay)

My mentor and friend told me about a place that her and her husband found magical, and visited often during their time together.  Tragically, she lost her husband much too early in life and it was in this place that he was released and sent out to the heavens…indeed, this place is magic.  It is called Grover Hot Springs and sits just outside of the aptly named Hope Valley in the Sierra Mountains.  She had highly recommended that I visit there sometime and I decided that in mid-june, with the snow melting and rivers engorged, it was time to go and check it out.

To get there, take highway 50 east into Meyers and then turn right at the 89 junction.  This takes you into the Hope Valley where 89 ends at Highway 88.  There you take a left and follow into the quaint town of Markleeville.  Once there, turn right onto Old Hot Springs Road and follow it into the campground and springs.  On this trip, I brought along my wife Sharon, and our dog Adobe.  The weather was perfect and the drive beautiful.  We didn’t soak in the hot springs this trip, but look forward to making another time for that.

As we gathered our things after parking at the trailhead, Sharon went to pick up a pine cone which sat about 6 feet from our car.  Just a few feet from the pine cone,  she spotted a snake.  Yes, we were greeted by a young rattlesnake.  Sharon slowly backed away and we left him to his nap.  Of all of my hiking in the Sierra, this is the first time I’ve run across a rattler.  In Native American spirituality, snakes are powerful medicine.  They represent transmutation, the shedding of the old skin and welcoming the new.  This concept is powerful in the realm of spiritual growth.  So I took this as a sign that the Universe is at work, and we were indeed entering into a transformational space.

This hike is short and easy…3 miles round trip and overall flat (150 ft. elevation gain).  The climbing section was actually to get to the falls and climb to the top if desired (which I did).  With the snowmelt, the falls did not disappoint.  We journeyed there at a great time to see its’ beauty to the fullest.

There is nothing like water to cleanse our souls, prepare us for the next phase of life and show us what is ahead.  Water is clean and refreshing.  Sometimes this is what we need in life, a clean and refreshing change to revitalize our spirits and move in a direction that  elevates the human experience.  Maybe at a minimum, magical places like this remind us to let our souls fly…
