“Hope is Faith holding out its’ hand in the dark” George Iles
There are many areas up in the Sierra Mountains to see fall color and Hope Valley has to be one of the most spectacular. This valley lies between South Lake Tahoe and the Carson Pass. If you are unable to hike, it is well worth taking a scenic drive to witness all of its’ color and beauty. I took a 4 mile hike that basically traveled up a dirt road. It started at a parking lot at the junction of highway 88 and 89. The trail/road is Burnside Lake road. Adobe joined me for this one and it was a breezy day to enjoy this colorful landscape. I usually like to have an end destination such as a lake or a peak, but on this day, it was about taking in all of the color along the way, stopping for lunch, and then heading back.
This was my first time seeing the fall color here, and I must say, it was exhilarating. The dirt road I was following had an incline, but nothing that was too steep to handle. Having spent a large portion of my life in Southern California, fall color was nonexistent to me. Northern California, and especially this area, has opened a whole new beautiful world for me. The aspens were at their peak with vibrant yellows and oranges and leaves were flying all around as the breezes gently swept through the trees.

As part of my plan for the day, I drove up highway 88 through the Carson Pass, dropped down into Hope Valley for my hike, and then drove back up through Highway 89 into South Lake Tahoe. Below is a little photo essay of the drive….it was truly fantastic!
As I reflect on the day, I feel like a got a true taste of the fall color for my first experience here. As the name implies, it filled my heart with hope. Hope for the future and for all that is and will be. On this trek, like so many others, my heart was free. With this freedom, the universe pulled me in and showed me just how beautiful it is. There is really nothing better. Sometimes it is hard to imagine what is beyond this life. When I am in a place like this, my faith is restored. I know that I will be back to this valley, as I feel like I just touched on all of its’ beauty and there is so much more to see and experience.
