“The Wind is the whisper of our mother the earth; the wind is the hand of our father the sky; the wind watches over our struggles and pleasures; the wind is the goddess who first learned to fly” John Denver
I love the sound of the wind as it blows through the pine trees. I could sit and listen to it all day. It reminds me of all that is beyond my humanness and the invisible path that beckons me to follow to a place of solitude and peace. There is no greater place than this.

Again, since this is my first season snow shoeing, I am not hiking too far and am going to places that I have been to before and am somewhat familiar with. Frog Lake is the first lake you get to when you hike on the trail to Winnemucca Lake and beyond. The trail begins at the ranger station at the top of Carson pass (hwy 88). I have done this hike many times in the summer and it is stunning. So I was curious to see what it would be like in the winter. My friend Eva joined me and the trek to the first of four lakes on this trail is only about .5-.75 miles to reach it. Overall, our journey was about 2-3 miles as we walked a bit past the lake.
It is interesting to see terrain that has withstood the test of time and endured the many weather challenges it has faced. There are lessons to be learned from nature and its’ enduring beauty. As we peered over the frozen lake, the wind patterns created on the snow indicates how cold and treacherous the high country can be in the winter. The season is brutal with very low temperatures and high winds that cut through every living thing. It stands to reason why animals go into hibernation during this time. And it teaches me that when times in my life are dark and cold, it’s time to find my own inner place to ride out the storms….a place I know well and find comfort in.
“So welcome the wind and the wisdom she offers; follow her summons when she calls again; in your heart and your spirit, let the breezes surround you; Lift up your voice then and sing with the wind”. John Denver (Windsong)
