I grew up in Southern California and am used to lots of sunshine, people and traffic.  However, I never really cared for the hustle and bustle.  So about 24 years ago, I decided to make my move and off I went to Seattle, Washington!  What a beautiful state…and what a rainy, cloudy state!  I lasted for 2 years, decided I needed a little more sunshine and landed in Northern California, where I’ve lived ever since.  Since I don’t have a lot of experience with snow, other that some downhill skiing when I was younger, adding that I am super busy during the winter months, I haven’t explored the mountains in the winter much.  This year I decided that I really wanted to explore the high sierra in the winter and signed up for a snowshoeing class through REI.  I am so glad that I did!

I took the class to learn about the equipment, and to understand snowy terrain and potential hazards.  The three instructors that led us did a fantastic job, and I would highly recommend the class to any folks who want to try it out.  My two friends, Eva and Kristine joined me and our trek resulted in about 4 miles.  It was a 30 degree day with light snow and very little sunlight (it poked through a few times).  And I loved every minute of it!!  Since this was a class, I only took pictures with my phone, but I would love to learn how to properly take snow pictures.  I have always loved winter landscapes and shooting pictures of them has been on my bucket list.

More importantly though, experiencing the mountains in the winter is my main objective.  I love solitude.  Being out in the wilderness with the snow falling, brings an inner peace that is unmatched.  The fresh tracks of snow shoe hares, icicles hanging from the pines, and frozen lakes of pure white bring beauty to such cold and icy weather.  It amazes me how different the landscape looks under a snowy blanket and yet wholly beautiful.  Some people might not like the silence that the snow brings, but I find it refreshing and inspiring.  It is as if I am stopped for a moment in time, and that moment is magnificent.
