One of the first stops I made last July while visiting Yosemite National Park was McGurk Meadows. Plan A was to take this short hike to the meadows and then go on another short hike to Sentinel Dome. This plan started out very well as there was plenty of parking when I arrived. The trail head is off of Glacier Point Road and parking is dirt area on the side of the road, so it can be easy to miss. There is a sign, however, for McGurk Meadow that is easy to see. This hike is 1.9 mile round trip and very flat. So it isn’t very taxing and the meadow is quite lovely.
I have a fondness for flowers and plants. So much so that I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Ornamental Horticulture when I was younger. There are so many types, shapes, and colors of flowers. It’s hard to look at any flower and not be happy. They make us smile and give us comfort. July in the high Sierra comes alive with wildflowers and is the month which I do the most hiking, seeking them out. I am never disappointed when I come across a meadow of flowers and McGurk Meadows fell in line with that. I came across Indian Paintbrush, Tiger Lily, Sneezeweed, and Lupine, just to name a few. They are the jewels of the meadow, and I am always honored to be in the presence of such royalty. I returned from this hike feeling rich in spirit and ready for the next phase of the day…unfortunately when I got to the Sentinel Dome Trail head, I had to resort to Plan B (see my last blog). As I pondered my next move, I remembered the sights and fragrances of the flowers…and felt joy.
